Happy Good Friday. I thought it fitting for today to dig up one of my older abstract paintings. I believe I painted this one about four years ago, it was during a fun art session with Olga when we had the old studio in what I like to call the “Quonset Hut” building.
Back in these days, I was still learning many of the very basic rules of how the elements in an abstract can be organized, with this specimen matching what is called the “cruciform” pattern. Around this time period I loved piling on the paint very thick. To obtain the effects seen here I mixed heavy amounts of raw paint with hefty doses of acrylic medium and applied it in various ways. For “Good Friday” I played around, knifing it on and even throwing the paint at the canvas (much to Olga’s alarm). Then I sprayed with water, turned at various angles, and let it run…
Admittedly the emotion evoked by this artwork is quite heavy, and even gruesome; I get mixed feelings by it even today when I pull it out for viewing, yet realize all of it is critical to the subject matter at hand and how the elements of this abstract flow together in the first place.
