Something’s Up…

Okay, I’m tired tonight, my head still hurts a bit, but I think I’m sane so here goes another post.

For “Something’s Up”, we have a little bit of mixed media going on with this little 11 x 14 canvas. It is mostly a painting, but with the addition of two opportunistically selected girls obtained from some print edition of Elle magazine. They stand together, varnished into a chilly, fuzzy cityscape scene, with poses suggesting something is going on that may not be good.

For us artists, magazines of all types are a gold mine. They are a rich source of material for painting practice, as one can readily locate any sort of scene to paint an exercise off of. It is also fun sometimes to go into collage mode, and just take clippings of all sorts and throw them together with varnish. In the case of “Something’s Up”, I successfully married a background painting with a pair of found photos. For an added touch, I finished off the edges with various clippings from magazines, posters, and gift wrap grabbed from my collage bin, and then finished it all off with heavy coats of high gloss varnish so it appears as one seamless artifact.

I do happen to know when I made this artwork, due to a major astronomic event that was perplexing the nation around the same time (August 2017).

🙂
