So, as one could imagine, star-shaped gift boxes catch my interest when I find them at art stores. I buy a set of blank ones every now and then, just to have creative fun with them.
Shown here are the results of two separate star-box projects. On the left are colorful star boxes I decorated just this past Sunday afternoon. The main technique used to make them was pouring and running. This was done by using diluted paint and water spray to create splatter and run effects. Multiple cycles of running, spraying, tilting, and drying resulted in a colorful layering effect. These are techniques normally used on canvas in the course of making abstract paintings, but it turns out they work fairly well on star boxes too.
I made the star boxes on the right last Christmas season as an exercise in the art of decoupage. Here I painstakingly selected, cut, and arranged faces from that favorite artsy fashion mag of mine, Elle; heavy doses of acrylic medium and varnish secure the clips to the raw boxes and provide a high gloss finish.
The resulting star boxes are perfect for storing small items such as jewelry or trinkets, or as decorations under a year-round Christmas tree setup.
